El género Encope en el Plioceno del norte de Chile (Echinodermata, Echinoidea)

Resumen

Se estudian y describen nuevos materiales del genero Encope L. Agassiz, 1840, procedentes de los alrededores de Caldera, Chile (lat. 27° 4' S.; Iong. 709 49' O.). Ellos pertenecen a la especie creada por G ig o u x (1916) -de la misma localidad tipo- y determinada erróneamente como "Monophoras- ter caldenensis o caldensis" por autores posteriores. Se rectifica el nombre genérico bajo una nueva combinación: Encope calderensis (Gigoux) y se designa un neotipo. Esta especie es referida a la serie basal del Plioceno de Caldera. La comparación con Encope chilensis Philippi, 1887, permite confirmar la validez de ambas formas. Se vuelve a figurar, agregando una descripción complementaria, medidas y otros antecedentes de interes para el holotipo de E. chilensis Phil.

Abstract

New specimens of the genus Encope L. Agassiz , 1840, from Caldera, Chile (lat. 27? 4' S.; long. 70° 49' W.) are described. They belong to the same species recorded by G ig o u x (1916) -from his type locality- and reported mistakable as "Monophoraster caldenensis or caldensis", by posterior authors. Generic name is rectified under a new combination: Encope calderensis (Gigoux) and a neotype is assigned. Previous stratigraphic studies allow to assign this form to the lower part of the marine Pliocene deposits of Caldera. This species has been compared with Encope chilensis Philippi , 1887, concluding that both forms are valid. The holotype of E. chilensis Phil, is again figured and a complementary description, measures and general observations are also given.
